Blind

(In France, dust from the wings of a Death’s Head Hawk moth was thought to cause blindness if it entered the eye.)

my eyes,
they glow hot and bright
through my eyelids that keep the light
from bursting out.
come

dear moth,
they invite you to rest
upon them. stretch your tired wings
over each eye. gift me the dust you carry
to dim my bright eyes. my eyelids can no longer
contain them from illuminating

the soil that will claim my lover,
and my mother, and my father.
